LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire added another veteran to his 2022 roster Friday with the official signing of defensive back transfer Keyon Blankenbaker to an athletic scholarship agreement.
Blankenbaker, who has played the previous four years at Wyoming, will have one more season of eligibility remaining with the Red Raiders. He has made 27 starts over his career in the secondary, including 10 a year ago as a key member of a Wyoming secondary that led the Mountain West and ranked 12th nationally in averaging only 189.8 passing yards per game allowed.
"Keyon will add another veteran presence to our secondary, giving us even more depth in a room I felt was really strong this spring," McGuire said. "Keyon is a talented defensive back that can play multiple positions for us, namely at our Star spot. We look forward to him arriving to Lubbock in the coming week to join our football family."
In Blankenbaker's 10 starts over 11 games in 2021, he recorded 33 tackles, including 24 solo stops. The incoming sixth-year back was responsible for one of Wyoming's 10 interceptions last season – he returned his first career INT 50 yards for a touchdown from the nickelback position in a contest versus Ball State on Sept. 18. The following week, he led the team with seven tackles, six solo, on the road at UConn.
