Texas Tech will look to breakthrough for its first Big 12 win of the season when it plays No. 13 Kansas State at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan, Kansas.

The Red Raiders (10-8, 0-6 Big 12) are coming off an 81-74 loss to No. 21 Baylor on Tuesday night, while the Wildcats (16-2, 5-1 Big 12) earned an 83-82 overtime victory over No. 2 Kansas to ignite a court-storming at Bramlage. Tech has lost six straight to begin Big 12 play for the first time since the 2015 season, is 0-3 on the road, and 0-6 against ranked opponents. KSU is 10-0 at home and off to its best start since the 2009-10 season.  

Kevin Obanor leads Tech with 15.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game this season and comes into the game against Kansas State with 1,947 points and exactly 1,000 rebounds through 141 career games. A fifth-year senior, Obanor had 10 points and four rebounds against Baylor after 10 rebounds and eight points at Texas in the past two games and is now one of 10 active players with over 1,000 career rebounds. Tech freshman Pop Isaacs leads the team in Big 12 games with 16.4 points per and is now at 12.1 points per game for the season after going for 14 against Baylor and 23 at Texas. Isaacs has made 44 3-pointers this season with two or more in 12 games. Jaylon Tyson is coming off the first two double-doubles of his career after scoring a career-high 19 points with 12 rebounds against Baylor and having 12 points and a career-best 14 rebounds at Texas. He is averaging 10.0 points and 5.9 rebounds for the season. Fardaws Aimaq made his return at Texas and has scored 12 points in both games back. He had missed the previous 16 games to start the season with a foot injury and is coming off a game against Baylor where he added nine rebounds to his 12 points – falling just one rebound shy of his 42nd career double-double. De'Vion Harmon had six assists against BU and is now averaging 12.1 points and 3.6 assists, while Daniel Batcho is second in the Big 12 with 1.9 blocks per game and seventh in the conference with 7.0 blocks per game. Batcho is scoring 9.9 points per game but has been limited to 3.3 points per conference game.

Texas Tech made 12 3-pointers in the loss against Baylor for its conference high and had a season-low nine turnovers. It was the fourth time this season with 10 or more 3-pointers with a season-best 14 coming in a non-conference win over South Carolina State. The Red Raiders are currently third in the Big 12 with 7.5 3-pointers per game and third with a 48.1 field goal percentage.  

Keyontae Johnson leads Kansas State with 18.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game and is coming off 24 points and eight rebounds in the overtime win over Kansas. A transfer from Florida, he played for Tech assistant coach Al Pinkins before transferring to KSU this season. Johnson has started all 18 games this season, and is averaging 20.7 points and 7.8 rebounds through six Big 12 games. Markquis Nowell leads KSU with 21.8 points per Big 12 game and is scoring 16.4 ppg. through 18 starts. He was limited to four points against the Jayhawks but provided seven assists in the win to take his season total to 151 – an 8.4 assists per game average that leads the Big 12. KSU is scoring 85.2 points per Big 12 game, including going off for 116 points in a home win over the Longhorns. Desi Sills is adding 9.3 ppg. after going for 24 against KU and Nae'Qwan Tomlin is at 11.1 points per game following a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double in the KU win.

Kansas State owns a 24-23 all-time advantage in the series and is 17-6 over the Red Raiders in Manhattan, Kansas… The programs split the regular-season series last season with the home team winning both times… KSU earned a 62-51 win on January 15, 2022 on its home court before Tech secured a 73-68 win in Lubbock on February 28, 2022 in the second matchup… The Red Raiders had won four in a row in the series before splitting in 2022… Tech comes into this season's first matchup having won 8 of 10 in the series… The last time KSU was ranked and Tech was not, the Red Raiders earned a 66-65 win over the then-No. 25 Wildcats on January 10, 2017… Kansas State associate head coach Ulric Maligi was on the Tech staff from 2019-21 as an assistant coach before leaving for Texas last season and then joining the KSU staff this year… Tech will host Kansas State on Saturday, February 11 – a game that is already sold out.

UP NEXT

Tech will return home to host West Virginia at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25 at the United Supermarkets Arena before playing at LSU next Saturday for the Big 12/SEC Challenge. The Red Raiders are currently 8-3 on their home court after opening Big 12 play with three straight home losses that ended a 29-game home winning streak. Tech had gone 9-0 at home last season in conference play. WVU hosts Texas on Saturday in Morgantown before traveling to Lubbock.
