Texas Tech's strong showing at the Green Wave Invitational was rewarded Tuesday as a couple of Red Raiders were honored with Big 12 weekly awards. Kenna Sauer was named Offensive Player of the Week while KJ Adams took home Defensive Player of the week.
This marks the first Big 12 weekly award for Sauer and the second for Adams, who was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 7 after her performance in the Red Raider Classic. Adams and Sauer are the first duo of Red Raiders to pick up Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors in the same week.
Adams recorded 50 digs, averaging 5.0 per set over three matches, earning Green Wave Invitational Defensive MVP honors. The graduate transfer led the Red Raiders in digs in all three matches with 14 against UAB, 15 against Tulane and 21 against Sam Houston. The libero also added a couple of aces and her first kill of the season. Adams has posted double-digit digs in 11 of 13 matches this season, three of which were 20-plus dig performances.
The Mont Belvieu, Texas native leads the Big 12 in digs (204) and digs per set (4.64), ranking in the top 50 nationally in total digs. She becomes the first Red Raider to earn multiple Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week awards in a season since 2019 when Emerson Solano earned the honor twice.
Sauer totaled 49 kills on the weekend, averaging 4.9 per set to earn Green Wave Invitational Tournament MVP honors. She capped off the weekend with a 30-kill outing against Sam Houston, the first 30-kill performance from a Red Raider since Emily Hill in 2019. Sauer averaged 7.5 kills per set against the Bearkats while hitting .391 to help Tech to a four-set victory and an undefeated weekend. In Tech's match against Tulane, Sauer set a career-high with four aces as the Red Raiders tallied 11 total in the match.
The Ankeny, Iowa native leads the Red Raiders in kills (130), kills per set (3.51), points (156) and points per set (4.22). She ranks in the top 10 of the Big 12 in kills, aces per set and points.
