Lawmakers have voted to impeach President Trump for a second time

He has only has six days left in the white house and when he leaves he'll be the only the president to have been impeached twice. One week after the deadly capitol riot, house lawmakers concluded the commander-in-chief is guilty of "Incitement of insurrection". 197 republicans voted against the resolution. They say it's poorly timed, divisive and that the nation needs to move on and heal. Now it's up to the senate to hold a trial and determine whether to convict. But senate majority leader mitch mcconnell has rejected the idea of an emergency session, saying it will need to wait until after the inauguration. In a video address from the White House, the president condemned last week's violence but did not address impeachment. Mcconnell says the senate should focus on a safe inauguration and an orderly transfer of power.

Washington DC is bracing for violence ahead of president-elect Joe Biden's inauguration with unprecedented security

More than 20,000 national guard troops are being called in for the inauguration. That's more than triple the number of active duty U.S. troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria combined. The FBI and Capitol Hill police have warned that far right extremist and white supremacist groups are plotting more action in the darkest corners of the web. Numerous arrests have been made since the riot and the FBI is looking for hundreds more people involved.

President-elect Biden will no longer be taking an Amtrak train to the inauguration as planned

He wanted to take the 90-minute train ride from Wilmington, Delaware to Washington as he did for so many years. Some officials say there are security concerns about Biden's arrival at Union Station, just blocks away from the U.S. Capitol. Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris are expected to take their oaths of office on the west front of the U.S. Capitol.

Four more people have died from COVID-19 in Lubbock

That's 622 victims since March. Covid-19 takes up 19% of capacity in our trauma service area, the lowest that number has been in weeks. That's still above the governor's 15% threshold for economic restrictions. City staff confirmed another 144 new cases yesterday. With another 121 recoveries, there are more than 3500 active cases in Lubbock County. That's about where the number has been for a while.

The city working to encourage people that getting the vaccine is safe

It assembled a diverse panel for city leaders to tell their stories. District 1 councilman Juan Chadis says he and his wife both got the shot, and had no side effects. He encouraged everyone, including Spanish-speaking residents who qualify to get in line. Council members assure everyone the coronavirus vaccine is safe.
