Rain and freezing rain today, snow starting tonight

LUBBOCK, Texas -

Temperatures are around freezing for the area. There has been some showers to start the day as well. So far it has just been some light rain, but as temperatures drop a little more some freezing rain may take over. Not expecting travel concerns as road temperatures are still above freezing.

TODAY: High near 36, northeast wind will stay light 5-10mph. Mostly cloudy with a 80% chance for rain for the area. At times this may change to freezing rain or sleet. Into the evening hours a better chance for this change over in our northern counties first.

TONIGHT: As temperatures continue to drop below freezing we will have a better chance for freezing rain and sleet. Northern counties will be transitioning into snow that will spread southward by early morning.

SATURDAY: Accumulated snow expected for much of the area. Lesser amounts for the southern counties with 3"-6" possible for the rest of the South Plains. This will start to diminish and move east through late morning into the early afternoon. Staying cold again with the highs in the mid 30s.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY: Hazardous traveling conditions will start with roads becoming slippery later this evening and Saturday. Snow, sleet, and/or freezing rain will cause limited visibility. Try not to be on the roadways during this period, if you must please use extreme caution.

EXTENDED: Coldest temperatures early Sunday morning. Even though the precipitation chances have ended, the roads will still have slick spots. Drive carefully that morning, temperatures will warm into the 40s that afternoon. 50s next week with cloud cover and wind increasing midweek.

Stay warm and safe this weekend! Matt will have the latest update to the forecast tonight on the News at Nine.
