Football: Game Preview: Week 15: Regional Championship: Lubbock-Cooper vs. Wichita Falls Rider (12-06-18)

Lubbock-Cooper is coming off a 34-14 win over Justin Northwest in the 3rd round of the playoffs. The Pirate defense didn’t get scored on until the 4th quarter of the ball game. Senior linebacker Jarred Gibson recorded a career high 24 tackles on the afternoon and the defense picked up 4 takeaways.  Isaiah Johnson continued his success in the playoffs rushing for 222 yards on 19 carries and 3 touchdowns.

The Pirates are meeting with the Raiders for the second time in school history and the second time this season. Lubbock-Cooper defeated Rider 27-7 back on October 19th in Lubbock at Pirate Stadium at First United Park. The Pirates were held scoreless in the first quarter, it is the only time LCP failed to score in the opening frame all season long. Running backs Isaiah Johnson and Jacob Dennis took over from there as Dennis scored a 12-yard touchdown and Johnson rushed for two more from 47-yards and 12-yards out. Johnson finished with 159 rushing on 16 carries and Dennis added 66 yards from the ground. Lubbock-Cooper averaged 7.6 yards per play to Rider’s 4.8, out gaining the Raiders 378 yards to 236 despite losing the time of possession battle by 7 minutes. Jarred Gibson (12) and Reese Wagnon (14) combined for 26 tackles. Carter Bradley and Rylan Wilcox had an interception each on the day. 

Scouting Rider:

Wichita Falls Rider is coming into the game on Thursday winners of six consecutive games dating back to the first game against Lubbock-Cooper on October 19th. The Raiders finished district 3-5A play 4-1 and picked up the 2nd see for the playoffs. Rider defeated Fort Worth Wyatt 57-44 in the bi-district round, El Paso Andress 41-10 in the area round and Canyon Randall 38-7 in the regional semifinals. This season marked the 24th playoff appearance for the Raiders, as they own a 32-23 record in the postseason. The furthest Rider has ever been in the playoffs was the state semifinals back in 2012. Head coach Marc Bindel is in his 5th season in Wichita Falls with an overall record of 32-28.

Thursday Storylines:

  • Lubbock-Cooper comes in ranked 7th in the Harris Ratings and 6th in the Dave Campbell Texas Football Magazine rankings for Class 5A DII. LCP also checks in at number 7 in the AP Texas high school football rankings which ranks all teams from the 5A classification.
  • Lubbock-Cooper will look to improve to 14-0 with a win on Friday. The Pirate football team has never won 14 games in a season.
  • The current thirteen game winning streak for the Pirates is the record for most consecutive wins by the football program in a single season.
  • Lubbock-Cooper is making their 17th playoff appearance as a football program and 6th consecutive appearance since 2013. In the playoffs, the Pirates have a 19-16 record. Current Head Coach Max Kattwinkel has a record of 11-5 in the postseason, which is the most wins by an LCP head coach in the playoffs.
  • The furthest a Lubbock-Cooper team has advanced is the State Quarterfinals, the Pirates have done so on four different occasions – 1970, 2010, 2013 and 2018.
  • Lubbock-Cooper is in the Regional Final (State Quarterfinal) for the 4th time in school history. The Pirates are 0-3 all-time in the state quarterfinal losing to Petersburg 41-7 in 1970, Alvarado 35-17 in 2010 and Stephenville 42-28 in 2013.
  • The Pirates will be playing on Thursday night for the second time since 2015 and the second time this season. In 2015, the Pirates travelled to Amarillo to play the Caprock Longhorns on October 1st, 2015, winning the game 55-7. This season, LCP travelled to Wichita Falls to play Old High on October 25th shutting out the Coyotes 38-0.
  • Lubbock-Cooper is playing Rider for the second time this season. The Pirates have played a team twice in a season in four other occasions. LCP play Sweetwater twice in 2004, Canyon High twice in 2005, Snyder twice in 2008 and Seminole twice in 2011. In those eight games Lubbock-Cooper is 1-7. The Pirates however are 0-4 in the second meeting with those schools ending their season in the playoffs. 
  • Running back Isaiah Johnson has run for 23 touchdowns this season and has set a new Lubbock-Cooper school record for most rushing touchdowns in a season.
