Eddy County, NM -

On November 29, 2018, at around 10:30 a.m. the New Mexico State Police investigated a double fatal crash involving a tractor trailer and five passenger vehicles on U.S. 62/180 at about mile post 52 east of Carlsbad.

The initial investigation indicates that U.S. 62/180 was closed in both directions while workers ran power lines across the roadway.  A westbound tractor trailer failed to notice that traffic was stopped ahead.  The tractor trailer rear ended the stopped traffic and crashed into five passenger vehicles.  A 2017 Toyota Tundra, a 2018 Cadillac Escalade, a 2017 Toyota car, a 2017 Chevrolet van and a 2011 Chevrolet van.

The occupants of the Cadillac Escalade Maria Marin (60) and Josefina Valles (44), both of Hobbs suffered fatal injuries in the crash and were pronounced deceased on the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator.  The driver of the tractor trailer, the driver of the Toyota Tundra, and the driver and passenger of the Toyota car were all transported to local hospitals for varying degrees of injury.  The drivers of the two vans were uninjured.

Driver inattention is believed to have been a contributing factor in the crash and alcohol does not appear to have been involved.

The name of the driver of the tractor trailer will not be released by State Police until the investigation is complete.

The crash remains under investigation and no further information is currently available.
