Helping 4th-Graders Do the Write Thing earns Silvia Miranda a $25,000 Milken Educator Award

CLOVIS, New Mexico -

A fourth grade teacher at Mesa Elementary in Clovis receives a national award for her work in improving students academic progress.

Silvia Miranda uses writing to lead to other academic advancements. Her students consistently outperform school, district and state averages in reading, writing and math.

Christopher Ruszkowski, New Mexico's Secretary of Education, said her work shows its rewards.

 "You are achieving over two years of academic growth with your kids in a single year. Over two years of academic growth in a single year. That deserves a huge round of applause," he said.

Miranda is the only Milken Educator Award winner from New Mexico this year. 

"I honestly am speechless, but I want to say, and I've said this before, that I do not believe that I do anything in my classroom different than what everyone here does. And that is just fill our kids with love," she said.

Along with the recognition, the organization's provides a $25,000 grant.
