State Comptroller Glenn Hegar says oil and gas continue booming Texas economy

LUBBOCK, Texas -

State Comptroller Glenn Hegar said the oil and gas industry will stay the backbone of Texas's booming economy.

Hegar is a featured speaker for the Tech Law School's Energy Law lecture series. As the state's accountant, Hegar manages the finances for the world's 10th largest economy. His lecture focuses on how Texas recovered from the great recession in 2007 and the downturn in oil and gas in 2015.

"When we had the big oil bust in the 1980's, people thought there was no more oil to get out; there really wasn't a whole lot there, but because of technology, fracking capabilities, those technologies have severely enabled and harnessed the ability of producers to go and get that oil, get that natural gas, so now you've seen prolific growth that has been out in the Permian Basin and that's had a ripple effect out into the state economy," he said.

Hegar is running for re-election. This would be his second term in office.

He faces Democratic challenger Joi Chevalier and Libertarian Ben Sanders.
