He is a Texas Tech alumnus, with a degree in broadcast journalism, atmospheric science minor. He holds the broadcast meteorology certificate from Mississippi State University.
Matt has gained first-hand knowledge of South Plains weather as a trained storm spotter. He's covered just about every kind of weather here, from tornadoes and massive hail to dust storms, extreme heat, ice storms, blizzards and plenty of beautiful, sunny days. Matt has also covered some of the biggest news stories in Lubbock over the past 15 years.
Matt is a member of Young Professionals of Lubbock, the Texas Tech Alumni Association and National Weather Association. He serves as a board member and past president of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock; and as member of the National Weather Service's local chapter of the Storm Ready program. He's volunteered for the Lubbock Area United Way as a loaned executive for the past several years, helping local businesses run annual campaigns. He is the 2019 chair of this division.
In 2016 the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce recognized Matt as part of its 20 Under 40 class. He's a 2017 graduate of the Chamber's Leadership Lubbock program.
Matt is a life-long Texan, previously living in San Antonio and neighboring town La Vernia.
He married wife Taylor in 2010. She works at the Museum of Texas Tech. They've rescued two pets, cat Maeby and dog Harry. Arrested Development fans will understand the cat's name.
